South Australian pace bowler Jason Gillespie has formally announced his retirement from Australian cricket during the lunch break of his side’s Pura Cup encounter with Queensland at Adelaide Oval.
Gillespie had been widely tipped to leave the game and pursue interests in the rebel Indian Cricket League but he was not able to formally make his intentions clear until after this match had started.
Otherwise he risked being made ineligible to play in his farewell match because the ICL is not sanctioned by Cricket Australia.
“I’d finally like to put an end to the speculation and formally announce my retirement from first class cricket in Australia,” Gillespie said.
“It has always been important to me to end on my own terms.”

A man accused of assaulting former Test cricketer Jason Gillespie has been remanded in custody.
Twenty-nine-year-old Matthew Zaffina, from Morwell in Victoria, was charged with recklessly causing injury and unlawful assault after punching Gillespie outside a Traralgon nightclub in Gippsland on Saturday night.
Zaffina has appeared in the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court in Morwell.
Police officers arrested him yesterday on the assault charges and for six outstanding warrants for nine previous charges including assault, driving without a licence three times, breaching a corrections order, damaging property and refusing a breath test.
Gillespie had been playing cricket for South Australia against Victoria in the Latrobe Valley on the weekend.
The cases have been adjourned until next Tuesday.

Welsh county side Glamorgan are reportedly close to signing Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie in a desperate bid to rebuild their team.
Gillespie, who has spent the past two seasons at Yorkshire, is expected to make up his mind on whether to join the struggling side by the end of the week, The Guardian newspaper said.
“We are interested in Jason Gillespie and we have been talking with him,” Glamorgan chief executive Mike Fatkin told the newspaper.
“He is not only a player of quality and experience but he would be available for virtually all the season.”
Glamorgan hopes the 32-year-old, who is Australia’s fifth-highest wicket taker, will help restore the club to glory after it finished last in the second division last season.
Gillespie, who took 259 wickets in 71 Tests for Australia, captured 75 wickets during his two-year stint with Yorkshire.

South Australia expects the guile of evergreen paceman Jason Gillespie to be a crucial factor in Tuesday night’s Twenty20 clash with NSW.
Gillespie will spearhead the Redbacks bowling attack in the Adelaide Oval fixture with support from the likes of Paul Rofe and Ryan Harris.
SA coach Mark Sorell said selectors had kept the faith in their 50-over team for the abbreviated format.
“It was a difficult decision, but after much thought selectors have decided not to change the current dynamics,” Sorell said.
“With four (50 over) wins in the past five games played, we’re keen to keep the momentum going.”
He identified former Australian fast bowler Gillespie as a key.
“The consistency and guile of Gillespie and Rofe will position us well to contain NSW to a gettable chase,” he said.

Jason Gillespie, now 32, would still love to see the grey topped with a baggy green, but not enough to do so at the expense of the younger brigade of quicks he admires.
“I’d still like to play for my country, there’s no doubt about that, but if I’m playing for Australia it means we’ve had fast bowlers get injured or lose their form dramatically. So, as a cricket fan, I don’t want that to happen,” Gillespie said.
“I’ve always said no but the last few months I’ve been thinking about it more and I’m actually going to get a level-three coaching certificate,” he said. “I’ve got some real ideas on how to help bowlers reach their potential.” Said Gillespie at Wollongong yesterday.
